Andrea,

Would you like to show the Women of Courage Series Feb. 9 through March 15 at Concordia Univesity’s Ferguson Art Gallery? I am the Gallery Director as you may recall. A reception for the show is scheduled for Sunday Feb. 15 from 2 – 4 PM. I would also like you to give a talk about your work for Women’s History Month on March 11 around 4 PM. YOu receive a $250.00 stipend for this talk (45 min. – 1 hour)

Are you available? Can you commit at this time? We provide the reception and a $200 reimbursement for your postcard announcement (you create and have printed) I have a contract and map of galleyr to forward to you…but I wanted to ask about the dates and to get a confirmation first….I hope you can do this. I need to know as soon as you can tell me for our Fine Arts Brochure deadline ASAP

I will send that for your general info…we can create the official one later…let me know…I think the show would be wonderful and go over great on campus!

Thanks for your inquiry and interest. Since you are new to Chicago, I suggest that you become involved in a few arts organizations. That is the fastest way to make contacts and becme involved in the Chicago art community.

I suggest becoming a member of the Chicago Artists Coalition, http:http://caconline.org/ and also Anatomically Correct, http://www.anatomicallycorrect.org/

Both (non-profit) organizations have a solid reputation for caring about artists and their work.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for your thought-provoking message about “Evening Birch.”

I have always been intrigued by form and how the effects of light can create illusions that challenge the imagination. “Evening Birch” represents that “moment” of stillness that occurs in early evening. In this instance, the trees are not foreboding– they are guardians and the Stonehenge of the the forest. The four trees in the foreground might possibly be having a conversation, summoning the viewer into the forest to experience stillness and peace.

Although I can’t express myself quite as beautifully as Mary or see the things she & you see I couldn’t help but think the dark spots on the trunks remind me of women’s lips. And, I thought that to be appropriate since it falls under “Women’s History Month”.
It’s not just “lips”, they evoke many different feelings, to me and are very expressive. Some are smiling, sad, tense or exclamatory to name a few. I’m quite sure more people would view this is in completely different ways too. I sure look forward to seeing those views. Good job Andria!

Dear Carol,

What an incredible observation! Part of my infatuation with trees, especially Birch and Aspen, is due to how closely they resemble people. For instance, the overall form of tress can be suggestive of bodies. Sometime they are “leaning into” one another or their branches become entwined.

In this particular painting, the dark markings on the tree trunks certainly resemble lips. And because of the justaposition of the trees, it appears that the trees are perhaps whispering to one another.

I began painting nature after spending several years solely painting the figure, and I became intrigued with the relationship between nature and humanity. But that’s another topic…..

Many of your paintings cause me to tear up. I don’t know why but the same thing happens when I watch certain episodes of Blue Bloods and Law and Order: SVU. Suffice it to say that your work inspires emotional responses. I suppose that means that your works are kinetic, and not just docile or static. In other words, they seem to generate emotions in those who are affected by your work. And I am one of those people. I especially enjoy your work inspired by the 9/11/2001 events. Those paintings leave me a weeping mess. God Bless you and your talents!
